On-line PD Testing and Monitoring of Switchgear
Partial Discharges can occur at various points in AIS and GIS. Sources of PD in AIS include voids, surface tracking and loose HV contacts, in addition to PD in bushings and instrument transformers. Sources of PD in GIS include protrusions on conductors, floating particles and delamination or voids at barrier insulators. By PD testing and monitoring, the development of underlying defects can be detected and insulation condition assessed.
Sensors - AIS
In AIS, High frequency current transformers (HFCT) sensors can be attached to the cables, Transient Earth Voltage (TEV) sensors can be attached to the metal-clad housing, and Airborne Acoustic (AA) sensors can be placed over seams or vents of the switchgear housing.
Sensors - GIS
UHF Barrier sensors can be attached over uncovered insulation barriers, UHF Window sensors can be attached over viewports and inspection windows. UHF Couplers built-in to the GIS can also be used.
