Partial Discharge Location and Mapping

Pinpoint insulation faults in your critical assets

Location and mapping are the process of pinpointing the exact location of a fault within an asset. Different techniques are used for detecting defects in rotating machines, cables, switchgear, and transformers.

For rotating machines, Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) analysis is used, allowing for the differential diagnosis of the fault's location within the machine.

In cables, the process involves cable mapping. By identifying the PD pulse and its reflection, one can calculate its source. Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) further aids by providing the exact length of the cable.

Within switchgear, the method involves measuring across multiple panels. By using precedence (Time of Flight / ToF) detection to locate the order in which the pulses arrive at the Kronos Spot Tester, the fault's origin can be determined.

For transformers, the approach requires placing multiple sensors across the transformer's body. This setup enables the triangulation of the fault's exact location.
