Kelly is our Director of HR and Administration, responsible for championing our high performance culture and making HVPD a great place to work. She is walking, talking proof of how the company re-invests in its people – having completed her Level 5 course in HR Management, she earned her professional Associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development in 2017.
In 2019, Kelly joined the HVPD Board of Directors and was also appointed Secretary of HVPD, Inc., the USA arm of our business.
When did you join HVPD?
I started at HVPD in June 2013, the first Monday after my last university exam! I started as Finance & HR Assistant, moving purely into HR after a year then being promoted to HR Manager in 2015.
What does your role involve at HVPD?
My role primarily involves training, recruitment, benefits, reviews – all things people related! I also work very closely with our finance team on payroll and budgets, our SHEQ team on Health, Safety, Environmental management, our Directors and Shareholders and manage the office and travel admin for the company. Every day is different!
What is one of your memorable moments working for HVPD?
Being part of the Charity team has given me some memorable moments over the years, the most notable is when we completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in 2018 – it was by far the hardest thing, both physically and mentally, I have done in my life! It was worth it though as we raised over £1,600 for our Charity of the Year, Centrepoint.
If I’m allowed to have two, another memorable project I’ve been involved in has been setting up our new subsidiary company, HVPD Inc. in Texas, USA – I’ve been involved in the business plan, company formation, insurance, accounting, employment – all aspects! It has been very challenging and interesting, and I’m looking forward to seeing, and helping HVPD Inc. grow over the coming years.
What do you like most about working for HVPD?
The people who work here really are great! I’ve made lifelong friends and my job is enjoyable and made easier because of the supportive team here at HVPD.
Also the training support that HVPD provide is very good. I’ve completed my CIPD Level 5 Diploma in HR Management through the company which helped me improve my skills whilst gaining a qualification at work.
I also really enjoy the variety of tasks I’m involved in and that every day is different.
What led you to a career in HR?
I studied Psychology at the University of Manchester and we did a module on Occupational Psychology which I found particularly interesting which made me think about HR as a career option. I’d been advised to find a company that could provide a wide variety of HR responsibilities and luckily, I got the job at HVPD which has provided exactly what I was looking for!
What’s the most unusual thing in your desk drawer?
I’ve not been to too many weird and wonderful places like the engineers have, but I do like to make sure they provide me with a regular supply of Peanut Butter M&Ms from the US to store in my desk drawer!
What do you like to do outside of work?
All the usual stuff – seeing family, friends, going to the cinema, binge watching tv series (currently on Peaky Blinders), reading, going to the gym! I’ve recently started to play Tennis so hoping to improve on my tennis game (AKA be able to return a shot!), and after renovating our house last year, the garden is the next DIY project on the list.
What advice would you give to people seeking a job at HVPD and/or in HR?
It’s always a good idea to do a bit of research on the company, even if you don’t fully grasp what we do, please have a go at explaining it in your own words – the effort really speaks volumes. You’ve also got to like getting involved, be a team-player and put yourself out there, all the opportunities are available for those who have the right attitude!
