Insulation Faults in HV Cables

Cables are the most widely used asset across HV networks, and so cable failures can result in downtime and disruption across your entire network.

Some of the most common causes of issues within HV cable insulation include sharp protrusions within the insulation or semiconducting layers, voids/gaps between layers of insulation, and moisture ingress. Such issues can be caused by poor manufacturing quality, bad workmanship during the installation process and third-party damage to the cable. This can lead to electrical treeing in the insulation – characterised by the progressive breakdown of the insulating material due to HV stress, localised heating due to current leakage and imperfections, and surface tracking, which involves the progressive degradation of insulation surfaces under prolonged energisation, especially in the presence of a contaminant.
