On-line PD Testing and Monitoring of Power Cables
Partial Discharges can occur at various points in power cables and cable accessories (joints/splices, terminations and cable sealing ends) and can eventually lead to an insulation failure. Sources of PD include voids in the insulation and at insulation or semiconducting layer interfaces. In the case of paper insulation (e.g. PILC cables), PD can also occur at delaminations. By PD testing and monitoring, the development of underlying defects can be detected and insulation condition assessed.
Sensors
High frequency current transformers (HFCT) sensors can be attached to facilitate testing and monitoring of cables.
